My practice involves techniques in painting, drawing, sculpture and photography, and is almost always figurative, or portraiture. I’m interested in pattern and texture, usually with the clothes subjects are wearing, and their surroundings. This stems from an interest in fashion drawings and interior settings which I loved to look at when I was small. My mum is an oil painter, so we grew up surrounded by art always. This has enabled me to take quite a traditional approach to my process from an early age, with an emphasis on observational and life drawing.
I like to work vibrantly with colour in pretty much all my projects, and use strong contrasts between light and dark, especially when it comes to the face and body, I think this is my love for theatrical stage performances, there is something very exciting about a spotlight on flesh in an otherwise dark and unknown space.
My work is personal to me and I always aim to be authentic, I use family members and loved ones to express my ideas and am often inspired by the people around me. I sometimes use a polaroid camera to capture natural moments and make into a painting that could be read by a viewer in numerous ways. I’m interested in making art that shares a piece of myself and makes me feel something, then observing how it makes other people feel, often very interestingly, completely different.
